Gronstal responds to Paulsen’s statements on judicial impeachment (IowaIndependent)

If Iowa House Speaker-elect Kraig Paulsen (R-Hiawatha) has evidence that the four remaining justices on the state Supreme Court have committed a “misdemeanor or malfeasance” that would warrant impeachment, he should step forward and present it, Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal (D-Council Bluffs) said Thursday.

“And if the Iowa House approves articles of impeachment, the Senate is ready to receive charges,” he said in a statement. “In the meantime, however, I and every other Senate Democrat will stay focused on creating jobs and improving Iowa’s economy.  And I’m asking Iowans to help us convince Republicans that jobs, jobs, jobs should be the legislature’s top priority.”

Wednesday, Paulsen said told Christian radio host Steve Deace that if he feels Iowans want the four justices removed from the bench, he will not stand in the way of impeachment. Voters ousted three justices during a retention election last month over the court’s unanimous 2009 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage. State Sen. Kent Sorenson (R-Indianola) said Monday that he will also push for impeachment proceedings.
