Dvorsky criticizes Branstad's comments (Press-Citizen)
A call by Republican Gov.-elect Terry Branstad for the Legislature to allow Iowans to vote on a proposed ban on gay marriage drew sharp criticism from at least one Iowa City area legislator.
Branstad said at a gathering organized by the Associated Press that the Senate's top Democrat, Sen. Mike Gronstal, D-Council Bluffs, was "dictatorial" for not allowing a statewide vote on such a ban.
He added that Democrats "had already paid a price for opposing efforts to let the public vote on a gay marriage ban" with the Democrats' loss of the governorship and control of the state House. He also cited the ousting of three Iowa Supreme Court justices after they were targeted for their support of a unanimous 2009 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in Iowa.
