Speaking out for victims of bullies (Press-Citizen)
City High junior Ari Dahlin said she was in her English class in September when her English teacher discussed a news story about Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi, who committed suicide after a webcam caught him in a sexual encounter with another man.
"(Teacher Daphne) Foreman told the story, and about a third of the class laughed," said Dahlin, 16. "Over the weekend, I got really angry, and I decided to do something about it."
Teaming up with a group of friends, she designed a black T-shirt that read "Suicide: It didn't need to happen" on the front. On the back, it listed the names of gay people who died after being bullied, including Clementi and Matthew Shepard, who was murdered in 1998 near Laramie, Wyoming. A $200 donation from City High's gay student alliance, GLOW, allowed her to print the T-shirts.
