McCain Tried To Pressure Gates To Let Troops Vote On DADT Repeal (LezGetReal)

A letter written to Defense Secretary Gates in September by Senator John McCain, discloses that McCain pushed Gates for alterations in the Pentagon troop survey so that it would ask the troops whether the ban on gays serving openly should be lifted and not on how to implement a repeal, Igor Volsy at the Wonk Room reports.

“I urge you and Admiral Mullen to modify the review and the survey instrument, or to conduct supplemental surveys, aimed at ensuring that the question of whether the DADT policy should be changed is answered,” said McCain.

However in his reply, Gates pointed out at an old military dictum to the Arizona Republican, and former military officer should probably know, as Gates told McCain the military is not a democracy.
