How will ousters affect pool of justice applicants? (DesMoinesRegister)
Some members of the commission that picks finalists for the Iowa Supreme Court say the removal of three justices in this month's retention vote could influence the number of candidates who apply to fill their seats.
One member of the Iowa Judicial Nominating Commission said in an interview that the high-profile ouster vote and attention on the process could keep potential replacements from applying. Another member said the three openings at one time might inspire more candidates to submit their names.
The 15-member commission will convene as early as next month to begin filling the seats left by Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Marsha Ternus and two colleagues, Justices David Baker and Michael Streit. The three were denied another term in the Nov. 2 retention vote, largely because of a 2009 decision that allowed same-sex couples to marry.
