The midterm elections were meant to reform a broken system in politics. Through billions of dollars in ad campaigns, candidates promised to "fix" the nation by taking out the trash and starting fresh.  It seems, unfortunately, that voters in Iowa decided to take a giant step back in terms of politics and in civil rights.

Voters in Iowa decided not to retain three Supreme Court Justices who were key members in allowing Iowa to become the first Midwest state to allow same-sex marriage.

Chief Justice Marsha Ternus, David Baker and Michael Streit all lost their seat on the Iowa Supreme Court after losing a retention election in which they simply needed more than 50 percent "yes" votes from Iowans to keep their seat. It marked the first time under the current system that a member of the court was not retained in Iowa, according to several news outlets including CNN.
