In the lead up to the 2010 session, Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, D-Council Bluffs, vowed to block any attempt at bringing a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage up for a vote. And despite the best efforts of Republican senators, Gronstal came through on that promise.
Now, with Republicans making big gains on Tuesday, claiming a huge majority in the state House and possibly drawing even in the Senate, Gronstal has restated his promise, telling The Des Moines Register he will once again thwart any effort to bring the issue to a vote.

Gronstal believes [doing] the right thing means protecting the civil rights of gays and lesbians. He reaffirmed Wednesday that he won’t bow to pressure, no matter how nasty it gets.
