On October 17, 2010, the Cedar Rapids Gazette endorsed Republican Terry Branstad for governor of Iowa, but included notable caveats, including his stance attacking civil rights and an independent judiciary:
"Branstad is not a perfect choice, by any means. We urge him to reconsider his desire to take civil rights away from gay and lesbian Iowans, and to take a stand against the political assault on Iowa’s courts."
ACCESSline likewise urges Mr. Branstad to stop politicking on the subject of taking away our civil rights, and to take a position of moral leadership on the current effort to oust Iowa's Supreme Court Justices—which is only happening because of a decision which expanded civil rights for Iowans by adding the LGBT community to those who receive equal protection under Iowa's Constitution.
